Green Meanie is a mom!!

Her sister, the Blue Devil, has been growling at me a lot so I thought she was getting broody too. This morning I found her in the nest box next to Meanie and when I moved her out there was a chick under her! Meanie tucked it in quick so I couldn't see if it was the only one....keeping my fingers crossed that the other two are soon to follow.
Congrats....as soon as she brings them out you will have to add pictures.

Quote: Well, an hour after she tucked that chick in she killed it. I've never had a hen do that so I was stunned but some here said it does happen...that they may only kill the first chick or kill all of a certain color. I let the other two with her till Sunday morning but she never brought them out or taught them to eat/drink. The larger chick was starting to sway while standing up and then he started to make distress peeps. (I think he was hungry and getting dehydrated.) When he did that she attacked him, pecking him and grabbing him by the toe. I removed both chicks, taught them to eat/drink, and they are fine now.
Two more of my dark hens have since gone broody but I'm not letting either one hatch chicks. As a matter of fact I think all 5 of my dark hens will be removed from the flock.

Here's the pic of the two little fuzzbutts...one light and one light/dark cross.

I have to say I am impressed with the tolerance of my Brahma lady. On Saturday night it froze 30*F and then Monday & Tuesday it was in the 90's She has handled it all without any signs of stress or discomfort, and is still laying just fine. The production red, boys, that I also have are huffing & puffing with wings hanging low. Last year was even hotter (in the 100's for weeks at a time -Dry) and all my Brahmas did wonderful. I didn't have anything to compare them with so just figured all chickens were like them but this year I have california whites & production reds and they already appear to suffer at 80 It is crazy. Glad I ordered more Brahmas...which ship 5/20

Hi guys! I have a question. I thought you all would be the nicest to ask. :) I have a hatchery light Brahma that is 12 weeks old. Top of the pecking order for sure. I just noticed a tiny bit of iridescent black in her tail... does this mean she is he? Or do girls tails have some sheen to it? No big red comb or waddles or anything.

My girls also have a slight iridescence in their tails; my buffs more so than lights. If the tail feathers start to curve than I would start to worry. From what you have described I think pullet is a safe bet.
