Backyard Brahmas!!

Can anyone tell me how to classify this color? 11 week old pullet, her mom is a dark brahma, and her dad is a silver penciled blue brahma.

I'd say she is a tweener, somewhere between penciled and well, not. She is probably lacking a few genetic components from having all the required elements needed for the intricate pattern of proper penciling .

Thanks Cabinchicky ... I didn't realize "Light" was part of their name, as in their color too!

Brahmas, being one of the first breeds of chickens recognized in the US. kind of get away with using the old original variety names that similarly colored later recognized breeds or varieties do not. For example, a light Brahma's exact same color pattern is a Wyandotte is called silver columbian, dark Brahma = silver penciled, buff Brahma = buff columbian.

Some of you are probably wondering why if Brahmas get a little slack on loose description variety names, why I am I a stickler on the pyle issue. That is because red pyle is an accepted and described color variety in other breeds, consisting of dominant white on a black breasted red pattern. To call splash phase blue partridge a red pyle would be in my mind the same as when I created my silver laced Brahmas and I would have wanted to call them barred Brahmas. Already a described pattern that did not fit the bird in question.

Here's another pic. My first Brahma, Rocky. I posted him on the Brahma thread a few years ago and was horrified at all the faults that were pointed out on him. I think he's beautiful, anyway! Now, he's an old man, crippled with arthritis, and is living out the rest of his life in his own private coop and run.
I think he's beautiful!

These Brahmas are gorgeous! I want to get a few more hens, as I have 3 cockerels and only 5 hens. They're too young to lay or brood yet which means I'll need to buy soon.
