Backyard Brahmas!!

Hi,
I have a light brahma, Henry, who is 18 weeks now. Shouldn't he start looking like a rooster? He has been molting but just a soft one. He is more than 2 feet from beak to tail. Here are some pix:

As you can see, he needs more room to roost in the coop.

Will he get even bigger? How much clearance on either side of the roost board - 6"? His feet are so huge, I'm increasing to 6" roost boards.

Thanks!

Are you sure he is a rooster? I'm thinking hen. I couldn't see any saddle feathers.

Haha! I was told on the 'what gender' forum that Henny was a Henry when she was 6 weeks old. Def a boy they said because of the red comb. But after this molt, I thought there should be things like saddle feathers at least. So, thank you for the 2nd opinions. :)

Hello peeps.. Thank GOD i found this thread. Was searching for it everywhere. I wanted to know if my buff brahma is Standard sized? and is it pure bred?

It would be a little helpful if I could see a picture with his face showing, from this angle his comb looks a little catywhompus (very scientific term there).

Anyway, his body type looks very brahma to me, with the exception of his comb (maybe) and I can't really see his head to give an opinion about that. There really aren't anything like purebreds in the chicken world, no registry like AKC (dogs) or AQHA (quarter horses). All chicken breeds, with the exception of a few, come from the combination of different breeds that are then bred for consistency to the breed type and desirable characteristics.

As far as size goes, I really can't tell from a picture how big or small he is. As a standard sized brahma, he should weight 12 lbs and be about 28 inches tall at the head when he reaches adulthood (12 months). Most brahmas are a little slow to mature, so sometimes they don't reach that size until closer to 18 months. A bantam brahma will be significantly smaller.

Hopefully, I answered your questions.

Thank you so very much for the info. And what about the feathers on his middle finger/feet? It's not that much feathery I guess.
Should have feathers on the outside of the middle toe and all toes on the outside of the foot. The inside toes should not have feathers. He has plenty of feathering on his feet. Looks like he might also have vulture hocks, but depending on where you are and what you are doing with him, that shouldn't both you. It's only a problem if you are planning on showing or breeding for sale in the US. If you are breeding for sale in the US, it is important to let the buyers know that the eggs/chicks will have vulture hocks or be carriers of the gene.

I'm not a seller. I just love to keep them and breed them. Yup, he doesn't have much feathers on his toes. Lemme post a picture of one of it's chick. That chick is now 6.5 months old and it's a Male. Have a look at him. And lemme know how's it.
