Backyard Brahmas!!

I was told these two dark brahmas are female-did I get bamboozled again???!!! I read that males will have black feathers on their bodies but mine are coming in marled (?). I may have four that I have to re-home. This isn't fun at all.

Check this post and compare your chicks. Mine were easy to tell the males from females. The males all had naked patches on their shoulders and the females feathered in smoothly. These are my first Dark Brahma babies, but of all the breeds I have, they were easiest to sex. It could be the angle of the pic. Take one from the top and compare. Look at the pic I posted of Chuck. He's definitely a male. Slow feathering, bald patches, very slow to get tail feathers.

They are gorgeous!!
Thanks, I'm pretty confused so I will have to play the wait and see. All of the feathers coming in on my DB's are beige and grey looking, I see no solid black. They are both very splotchy though. I hope one day I can raise a couple that I'll actually be able to keep!

I can't even begin to count the Easter Eggers that I purchased as chicks in the hopes of having several hens. I must have the magic touch for choosing EE males because I ended up with ssssooooo many! Good thing thy are easy to sell or I would be overrun with EE roosters by now! :he

Pretty birds, everyone!

My beauteous Isabella has finally started laying this week, at the ripe old age of nine and a half months! Lovely medium sized eggs, porcelain white and very smooth-shelled. The golden partridge Brahma is still holding out on me, but she must be on the edge of laying.

Isabella is GORGEOUS!! What color is she? I've never seen a Brahma like her. Congrats on the egg, one of mine took a full year to lay.

I don't even know what her colour is called! Around the web I've heard it called Isabella, pearl grey partridge, lavender somethingorother, porcelain? She was sold to me in the shell as a Buff Brahma, believe it or not! I love her to pieces.

A whole year to lay, that's amazing. I guess I'll just keep waiting. The Wyandottes lay moderately well and the black-tailed buff Marans are laying machines, so we're fine for eggs right now (in slight surplus, actually, but there is no shortage of takers).
