Backyard Brahmas!!

Pics
mes, are the two gold laced cockerels? I'm still trying to figure out the feather color sexing thing, as I have three I hatched in the brooder now and they're just starting to feather.

Huntress, thanks for the ideas. I'm going to get a bale of hay and maybe work on improvements to the run this weekend.

Birdlady, I know how you feel about chicks. I'm already looking forward to hatching more eggs, but it's just too late in the season here in the mountains. We could have frost at any time now

Hi Vickis Girls,

Yes - those are boys!

You should be able to sex brahmas by the length of their primary wing feathers. I am not familiar with color sexing. Can you post some pictures of your babies? We can try to help. I have three babies now I can post some photos and show the different lengths later as well - I think I have 2 pullets and one cockerel.

How early can you tell by the feathers? I have 3 baby Bahamas that are 3 weeks old and would love to know if I have any girls!

mes, I'll get my daughter to help post pics over the weekend. I've got 3 in the brooder that are 3 weeks today, and one blue partridge I hatched 6 weeks ago. If you look back a few pages to post 579, Janice explains the two chicks on the left vs. the two on the right. They're partridge, not laced but I think the sexing applies to both. Will get pics up later, thanks for asking!

Post some pics elliechooks! You can tell at about a week. I am not an expert at this - still learning myself. But between all of us on here, we can likely give you a good guess!

Pics aren't great cus they're on my phone but here goes.
They are 3 weeks tomorrow.

First the darker one, has beginnings of a tiny tail, longer wings and a visible comb.

Second and third are very similar. Lighter colour (different type), smaller wings, stumpy bump where tail should be!
