Congratulations! They are adorableMy backyard Brahmas are here. There are only 3 -- 1 light and 2 dark. There should have been another light pullet but instead I've got a 5th, red, packing peanut. The one light Brahma I have is the second biggest in the batch. Only one of the red males is bigger at 4 weeks.![]()

The larger of the two darks is quite friendly.
In my flock the hackles start showing at around five weeks saddles much later....I have a lot of different aged chicks here right now and compared them last night. I usually start sexing chicks in the first week...in these birds the wing feathers on the pullets come in quick and they complete feathering in much faster than the cockerels. Along with feather length and density I use 'attitude' to determine gender...the cockerels have quite an upright stance while the pullets are much more squat in appearance. I don't know if this will help you or not as some say they can't be sexed till the cockerels start to crow. Good luck with your new babies!I have fairly small hands, but the light one is the second biggest in the batch. Today the smaller dark proved incredibly intrepid. She likes being petted and kept coming right up to the door and waiting for me to pick her up while I was trying to catch the others.
I hope its not a stealth rooster because there were supposed to be two Light Brahma females but I seem to have ended up with an extra packing peanut instead so I only have one chance for a hen.
At what age would the hackle and saddle feathers start to show?
Pullet. Her comb would be a lot more pronounced/red if it was a boy. Here are some pictures of my only Light Brahma. Her(?) very large size and bold attitude has me worried. Only the biggest of the Big Red Boys (packing peanuts -- one of whom should have been my other Light Brahma pullet), is larger.
I couldn't get a really good shot of her neck because she was moving so fast and DH's hands covered her while he held her but the neck feathers are all round so far.
I didn't have her when she was newly-hatched. I didn't have a safe place for a brooder so my daughter's boyfriend's mother raised them for me.
The two darks are smaller. One is the 3rd smallest of my chicks. She's the one who comes straight up to me and waits to be picked up and petted instead of having to be caught.
