My guess on the origin of the name vulture hocks. The term vulture was often used for any raptor back years ago.

Oh, OK, thank you for that. That makes sense. So maybe that should be "Hawk Hocks", then, far more poetic!

p.s. I like them on hawks, too.....as long as they´re not anywhere near my chicks, goslings and ducklings, that is!

That is stunning. I´ve not seen one of these, not even on the tv. OK, so maybe it should be "bearded vulture hocked" BVC for short, sounds like a disease!

Anyway, I´m hoping to go and get some chicks today, but I don´t know if they´ll have the hawk-hocks

or not. Most Brahmas have them here. I don´t know if they´ve been imported from Europe, so have them, or if they´ve been imported from the US, but are the off-casts.

And bird-shows here are as rare as hens´ teeth as they say, so I don´t think anyone really cares. I try to get the best ones I can, apart form those that are ridiculously expensive, and some are, I don´t know who would spend the money! This guy today isn´t too bad, but he´s still asking the equivalent of $25 for a 6-wk-old chick, which I think is still a bit, but not as bad as some. He has one splash chick, some partridge and some lights, about 2 months old, and eggs, which I could put under a sitting hen or a duck.... so I´ll see what I come home with.

Actually, if you shut one eye and squint the other, it looks a bit like a brahma!

(especially the legs, and look at those vulture hocks!

)

Shouldn't they be called Brahma hocks? Beautiful hawk - I hope to never see one in person!
