Backyard Brahmas!!

This is a pic of a cockerel I have, I love the rich brown in his wings. He´s a black with, I suppose, red leakage, but I think he´s very pretty. I waited and waited for him to turn a bit so I could get a better side-view, but he was bashful!

As you can tell, he´s only a baby still.

OK, here´s another. I bought him yesterday. I´ve thought for ages about buying from this place an hour away from me, because they´re so expensive. R$150, which is about $70, but feels more like $150!! Well, I decided to get him to improve my birds here. He´s only a baby, but he´s going to be big, and he´s very gentle. He´s from European stock, most likely Dutch from what I can pick up from the seller. And the vulture hocks are allowed!!

He certainly looks promising!!

Today I leg-banded the 3 that I am certain are boys in my lot of 6. It's very possible all of my 6 are boys, though.

I think you might be right....3 cockerels. Last year I started out with a lot of them too but sold and gave away so many by fall there was nothing left for the freezer. If you don't cull for the pot maybe you can find them other homes.

When I think of the 100s of dollars I spend every year on hatching and chicks, and sometimes don't even keep one bird, your $70 cockerel seems like a real bargain!!

Quote: Well, that´s what made me decide to get him. I recently travelled 2 hours each way to get a dozen eggs and 3 chicks. Out of that, only 2 eggs hatched, but the chicks didn´t survive, and I kept 2 of the chicks that I bought. (They seemed small in comparison to mine that I already have here, but I needed new blood, and finding something that looks pretty pure Brahma is a real challenge here). Doing that cost me more than the money for the cockerel who should produce some nice chicks for me, and I´m chuffed because he´s about as good as I´ve found here yet. :) Now just wait for him to grow.
