Backyard Brahmas!!

@Blooie ...wait...are you sure those aren't ducks?

They are adorable, so glad you finally got what you wanted. My lights are turning out to be such sweet little chicks.

I'm going to guess pullet. He/she is two weeks old, correct? Can you get a shot with the wing spread?

Generally speaking, darks are slower to feather than the other varieties (at least all of mine have been). Usually at 2 weeks, the males hardly have any wing feathers. By three weeks, the males are getting wing feathers...bottom one will be black (maybe with a few stripes on it) the females will have nice wing feathers and are starting to get some tail feathers in. Mine are 2 1/2 weeks right now, I'll see if I can't get some pics this afternoon of the differences between what I think are pullets and cockerels. I have a huge variety of feathering coming in right now, a couple of the pullets (I'm pretty sure about these two) are actually already getting their tail feathers.

Anyway, I'll try to post later.

I just had to share this photo of my new for-really Buff Brahmas in their outside brooder. They are so cute! After all I went through to finally have some, I'm thrilled. I am a little confused about chick colors, though. I see pictures of BB chicks that are fluffy yellow, and then I see chicks that look more like these. Is it a hatchery bird vs breeder bird thing? Not that it makes much difference to me - these little ones were eagerly awaited.

Good well bred light and buff Brahmas should have a deep slate undercolor, this reveals itself in dark shaded down on their backs as chicks. Hatchery birds often lack this trait. If hatchery chicks show this, it might also indicate a over pigmented bird, possibly extra black in the adult pattern.

Have never raised darks, but the stance suggests male to me. But I usually don't get too excited about trying to sex them young.

Bumpercarr, liked your write up in scanner I got yesterday.

Yes , she/he has that stance a lot . Which is why I am guessing roo. Here is a pic of the wing opened up .

I would guess pullet from the wings the last rooster I raised from day old I don't remember it having such a distinct pattern on its wings(that could change with age). My roosters wings had very few patterned wings feather when they came in they were mostly black.
