Backyard Brahmas!!

Do you disagree that there is some buff coloring showing through or is this something you see occasionally with darks, I have not seen that before.
I don't see the buff coloring (2nd picture is what I'm looking at) but I have several hens/pullets that have some off coloring where they should have silver. And I'm 100% positive that mine are darks as far back as it matters. I guess the off colors will come up every now and then, big medicine may have some ideas about where this may come from....I don't know, I just know that it crops up every now and then.

I never judge color/pattern on any of my stock until they are at least a year old and have gone through one adult molt. In some dark lines, some of the males will have some mahogany showing through, especially in the saddle and shoulder area.

If they were a buff/dark cross, there would be problems in the patterning...buffs are Columbian patterned and darks are penciled. The results would mush up the penciling and I don't see that in these girls. Mush being a very specific scientific term...LOL.

The guy I got them from called the hen a brahma cross but I never thought to ask what she was crossed with. If I see him again I'll ask.

My neighbour gave us 4 chicks a week ago, they are now 3 weeks old and growing fast. I think it's safe to say they are 'mutts', but will be interesting to see how they feather out.

Well, she looks pretty brahmaish to me, so I don't know if he crossed her to another breed....I'm not seeing it if he did. One thing to keep in mind is that the color is carried from the father to the pullets. Assuming that the father was a dark, then she is a dark and should breed true to dark (with the color exceptions that I've talked about before). If the father was a different breed, but still a dark penciled bird, she might throw babies that aren't so brahmaish.

Now, if the male is also a "cross" between dark and some other color (called a split)...say gold partridge, then he will throw 1/2 dark pullets and 1/2 gold partridge pullets. I have some splits that you couldn't tell they are splits strictly by their color and then some that are obviously splits (they have some color from both).

If you allow them to breed it will be interesting to see what comes of it.

We're borrowing an incubator in a week or so, and plan on putting some of their eggs in. We just have the rooster and one hen now, as the other hen passed away a few weeks ago. So, I won't be able to collect many eggs for the incubator. Do any of you know how far ahead of time we can hold the eggs and still have a chance of them hatching? I should go do some research I suppose ;)

I usually put them in the incubator no later than day 10.

You also need to make sure to turn the eggs at least once a day (my hubby turns ours four times a day lol) until you put them in the incubator.

My parents have taken their hens eggs out of the refrigerator and put them under their broody hen and she hatched 7 of the 8 eggs!
