Backyard Brahmas!!

SD, is this something that happens with Brahmas, given their heavy body size and feathering? I wondered so I can keep an extra eye out, especially after what I went through to even get the Buffs. I'm ashamed to admit that that's one thing I never looked into like I should have.

This is the first time I have ever had this happen. She has been "toying" with being broody and I wonder if that didnt have something to do with it.

Their feathering is actually helpful to keep them cool. But, The small pea comb that is great in winter is almost useless in cooling them. Ultimately I believe there are a few contributing factors but definitely always something to keep an eye out for.

Thanks, my friend. We're heading back to South Dakota next week and by the sounds of it I'm not looking forward to the heat and humidity again. I'll keep a close watch on the chickens before I leave (been in the 90s here for two days) and make sure my chicken sitter does too.

Most of my family is there, SD. I grew up in Sioux Falls. So we come back a couple of times during the summer, and on at least one of those trips Katiebug (granddaughter) goes with us. Been taking her with us since she was 5 months old - she's now 10 and still looks forward to it. Her maternal extended family is in SF too, so she gets to spend time with hers and mine.

Thanks! I think this trip I'm most excited to see my little great-niece, Ashley, who was diagnosed with leukemia this January. She's a 6 year old bundle of smiles, even through all of this. Sioux Falls and the neighboring community of Brandon have rallied around her and the entire family, and I'd like to get a chance to thank at least some of them for all of the prayers, support,
fund raisers, special events, and sales to benefit Ashley, her brothers and sister, and most especially my niece Jenna and her hubby Chad. GO TEAM ASHLEY!!
