My household consists of 5 hens, 1 rooster (they are all 20 weeks old), 2 Catahoula's, and a new American Bulldog puppy. Ever since we got the chickens, I've been doing research on BYC "Back Yard Chickens" and I'm constantly telling my husband what I've learned. Long story, made even longer, we got our first egg this week, and she actually laid it in the nesting box. So I ask husband how the chicken knows to lay her egg in the nesting box and not somewhere random. He says "I don't know, did you look on Backyard Catachickenbully? Now, I'm pretty sure that was just downright rude

Most of the time they will lay in a nest box but I have had some that preferred to lay on the coop floor or outside the coop. I usually put golf balls in the nest boxes and have a better success rate of the pullets laying in the nest boxes. It appears that if they see an egg in a nest box, they want to lay in that nest box too.
