Lot's of inaccuracies in the article. Chickens lay eggs their entire lives, not just for two years. They don't normally live 10 years...some do, most don't. They don't attract predators if you house them properly, etc. There are a lot of dumb people out there that shouldn't be entrusted to keep animals if they don't take care of them. I'm glad there are rescue shelters for these birds but I wonder how often they get adopted? You're taking a risk introducing these birds to your flock due to diseases. That said, I think the backyard chicken business is growing just fine.

Shame that this is such a negative, poorly written article. The same is true of unwanted cats and dogs, but their numbers run into the hundreds of thousands nationally.

Thanks for posting the article. I'm sure some folks get excited about chickens but circumstances change and they have to give them up. But the article bugged me in its tone that it's the latest hip thing and when the charm wears off...I think that is inaccurate for the vast majority of backyard chicken keepers.

I like to think of myself more as "modern crunchy" lol. I live a granola lifestyle, but I shave regularly, drive an suv and paint my toenails pink. My part for the planet and my family: my own organic garden, I line dry clothes, my children have all sported cloth bums and I have a goat and six chickens. I also don't fill shelters with animals I've "changed my mind" about -> which is shocking because we have this one cat...

OH my. While many people here on BYC would not, the fact is that an awful lot of folks here on BYC WOULD indeed. It is reported on these threads all the time. I suppose that's the line between enjoyed livestock and very special pet?
