BackYard Chickens Stats:

No.... When I want to look up a topic about chickens, I think the post count on the backyard chicken statistics panel should reflect posts related to chickens... health... problems associated with chickens... etc.... not necessarily how many posts were on games, jokes and fun..

I think there should be two (2) display panels on this forum.... "One for social" and "One for folks interested in knowing what to do with their flock"... Ducks, geese, chickens, quail, emu, etc....
I agree completely. I had no idea post numbers from games were included in totals. That explains a lot.
There should be some way to know the difference. Not sure how to do it.
Best,
Karen

But wait! Hum, I just read the post about using the advanced search to find the meat of a discussion. Yeah, that works for me. That's good enough for me without splitting the counts.

Are you guys saying that you use post statistics when determining the knowledge level of people responding to posts? Or am i missing the whole point of your concerns?

I hope folks aren't counting on post count alone to determine the knowledge level of the members. That only says how active a member has been on the forum, but certainly doesn't tell where/how that member racked up the posts. Quality, not quantity, right? There are some super knowledgeable folks who rarely post here, as John mentioned, and I'd take most every bit of advice offered from them to the bank.

I'm not really that sure, either. I personally don't really care how they're counted in the stats. I'm not really into stats, period.
Me either too as well also.

I'm new enough at having chickens that I find myself checking here with regularity. But I never even thought about checking a member's stats to see if I was getting trustworthy advice or not.......Seems to me that someone who has posted no more than 2 or 3 times but has just resolved an issue I've been struggling with is just as valuable as someone who has posted thousands of times but never run into a problem like mine before. And I'm more likely to rely on someone who has exhibited a good deal of plain old common sense in posts as I am on someone who has read a book and becomes an instant expert with big numbers under his/her avatar. But that's just me. I've been known to jump in with an answer even though I'm relatively new myself.....bad habit, but I seem to have a lot of those. I spend a bit of time on the social forums as well. Guess I never even thought that the time I've spent frittering socially might affect how someone sees my more serious comments.

The amount of posts on a thread has nothing to do with it's content. So even if the Jokes and Games threads were removed from the list of most active threads, the remaining threads do not necessarily reflect any educational value what so ever. Some of the most educational threads, many times, have one answered post and would never make this list. Just because a thread has 4 pages of posts in a 24 hour period doesn't mean anything. Some of the best replies to an educational thread may never even get an ovation as well, so it does not appear on this list. Your best bet is to hang out in the forum you wish to learn something from or search in our archives for information on the subject you are interested in. :-)

To some extant, yes. I go looking for someone with a lot of posts and then check what they have written
and if their expertise can help me. But, yes, the first thing I look for when looking for a knowledgeable
person on BYC is their post count. Then I winnow from there.
Best,
Karen
