Backyard Dirt?

Hi - I'm a newbie with 8 babies - 3 EE, 1 Polish, 1 SLW, 2 Silkies & 1 Black Frizzle Cochin - all at 1 week old. I was wondering if I could put a pie tin of backyard dirt/sand in with them for play and baths, or would they eat it? They seem to eat EVERYTHING.....I had no idea about that.....

I'm newbie too, and I tried the exact same thing a couple days ago, but with a tuft of grass. My girls are 2 weeks old. But when I put the pie pan in the brooder, they all froze like it was some monster about to get them. My husband even used his finger to 'peck' at the dirt, but no go. Maybe I'll try again in a week.
