I have a 4 month old rooster, Buddy. He has been my pal since we rescued him, at 1 day old. I carry him around, and he does the wing dance for me when I come into his run. He follows me around and is so stinking cute. But tonight on our journey in the house, as we always do, he became mean on me. He bit me several times lightly, pecking my arms and hands then he bit me so hard and wouldn't let go of my arm till my skin was pulled up and I was bleeding. I sat him down on the floor when he let go and he just sat there looking at me. I picked him up and he began making noises like some thing off Jurassic Park. I took him back out to the run and put him in a holding pin till morning. Anyone know why he could have done this ? There is nothing for him to fear, he has done this routine for months, and we only stay in the house for about 15 mins at a time and then I put him to bed. The only thing different is I have 3 hens that are 2 months old in a coop next to his for about a week now but even over the week he has not done this to me. I send a lot of time with him, and his brother ( who is in another run and pin beside his )
Is this something I am going to have to watch out for now from now on? I went back out just a bit ago and he seems fine on his perch bar. Pic is Buddy. Also, what kind of rooster does he look like to you? His Mother was a red bantam or so we were told. She passed away by predator when he was a day old.

Around this age, is often times when the darling becomes the nightmare. Hormones start surging. They really don't have a large brain to train.

This forum is full of stories just like yours, were all of a sudden like a light switch has been flipped. The bad news is they really seldom go back to the darling no matter what you do. They can be dangerous to other people, especially children, who can take a flogging in the face.

He will act like everything is fine, but oh so often, he is waiting for you to be carrying something or bent over and will attack again. There is a theory, that making them the pet, holding them, actually makes you less dominant, and they lose their fear of you.

But the tough news, is I would expect this behavior to increase and yes, you will need to watch him all the time. I would not keep him.

Thank you. We have no children, only an older schnauzer we keep out of the run and a playful barn cat who knows when to run. No one comes around that could be in the runs, so we're ok in that area. I guess I will get me a sign to go on the run gate " Beware of bad boy rooster " lol . I get so attached to these kids it's hard to let go but time has come I suppose. Maybe I should get a goat to cuddle hahaha or a monkey!
Again, thank you!

Good idea! Were you wearing red?

I'm with Mrs. K. I, along with many others, have shared our roo attack stories on the forum, and we have all been quite attached to our young cockerels as well. Good luck.
Thank you. As I heal emotionally and physically from this attack I still have a love for that bad boy and a great sense of humor and will have to just work this out with him. It was shocking more than anything that he could pull my skin off as he did, but it'll heal and I will still pick him up but he will definitely have a firmer hand on him next time around.

I have more than one rooster that bites me when they want to be put down so they can do as they please. One is going two years old now. They can latch on and break the skin deep as well as remove a little. I grabbed one around then neck that brought blood the other night when I had to move him back to his coop with his girls instead of staying in another roosters coop with his girls. He didn't like that and let me know it. I let him know I didn't like getting bit. I think maybe we made progress about the biting.

I have 2 roosters but Buddy is the only one that allows me to pick him up. He will come up the ladder to me and sit and talk to me till I pick him up, usually. Tonight he was making weird sounds as if he was in Jurassic Park. I put him in a holding pin outside in the run instead of letting him sleep in the coop with the girls, I hated that but he was being mean all the way outside it was closest to where he normally sleeps. I will be more careful in the future when holding him, if I ever hold him again, so not to let him bite me as he did tonight. I had to use a butterfly stitch in my arm, it was that deep. Thank you for replying, your experience makes me feel hopeful that I can keep peace in the family
