Bad Case of Northern Fowl Mites

Well I cleaned out the coops today. Removed all the hay and pine shavings, even vacuumed out the nest boxes. Then dusted all of them and sprayed the coops with permethrin. I may spray the coops again tomorrow since I have nearly 1.5 gallons of the mix left.

Anyone think I should dust some younger birds (Bantams that are pretty small, but feathered) I already have outside in a cage? They're near the area, but I haven't noticed a problem with them.

Permethrin doesn't have very good residual activity, so I'd make sure to spray again with permethrin or another poultry-approved agent at 7 days or so.

If they are near the area, I'd definitely dust them unless they are itty bitties. My chickens get mites from the wild birds who just wander nearby in the pen- oh say about 10-20 feet away from my chickens.

Okay, got it. We have a lot of wild birds too that we feed. The chickens are free range and eat dropped food from the feeders so that may be the cause.

I'll go an Google the Permethrin to find out more about it. Thanks again for all your help. I may just get them beat or at very least under control.
