That's really nasty, but you have a lot of kid-raising to do. I can understand being distracted.
Does anyone in the area like chickens? Maybe you could find someone who can help you take care of them, or who'd like to take them off your hands. I don't mean to be harsh, I entirely understand why this happened, but if you can't keep a close enough eye on them to monitor for illnesses and mites then you might want to find a new home for them.

I appreciate your caring but we are able to care for him. We've checked the rest of our 30+ flock and he's the only one we've missed.

It was a hard pregnancy and the heat was unbearable over summer for me. We love him too much to not fix our mistake.

He may have pecked at his legs because of the mites. Tomorrow, I would soak his legs in warm soapy or Epsom salts water, and brushing them gently with a toothbrush to loosen the scales. Dry them and apply an oil of choice once a week. Castor, coconut, mineral, vegetable oil, or vaseline are some that can be used.

Thanks for that I will do it first thing in the morning. We feel just awful about it. He hasn't lost his appetite thankfully
