Bad Roo - bye, bye Stewy!

Just so I learn how to do this right the next time I get a roo.

How do you catch your Roos to hold them?

My soon-to-be gone roo will not get close enough for me to grab him. I can pick up the hens all the time but never, ever him. Is that normal roo behavior or another sign that he has an attitude problem?

The dunking in the water does work. I had a nasty Roo that I did that with also, but I held mine under the water for a bit, shook him a little when I pulled him out, then dunked him again. I was so mad at that Roo I guess I didn't care if I killed him at that point, but that Roo never bothered anyone again. Maybe he should have been dinner, but he was so good at taking care of his girls. He died of old age several years ago.

I sit on the ground and feed all my chickens meal worms out of my hands when they are out in the yard - they will do anything for meal worms! I have handled them since day 1 though. And I take turns picking them up and holding them while they are 'snacking', roos, too. My two roos were 'accidents' - were supposed to be girls - but we love 'em anyway. The only ones I have to 'catch' (distract w/worms with one hand and grab with the other and then lots of huggin' & treats) are the Sebrights who are very friendly and love to come 'talk 'to me, but are not keen on being picked up.

I'm no chicken expert. But they are birds. And I've lots of experience with birds. Each is an individual and has it's own personality. Some are just plain ornery and if you spend enough time with them, then maybe they will turn out ok. Most are not like that but my point is, it's probably not your failing that this silly roo decided you were target practice. Since we are talking chickens and not expensive birds like Macaws, the water barrel and freezer camp ideas sound great to me unless you are determined to spend a lot of time on him.

I have a great roo! More like a puppy dog than a roo. Try a black Brahma. Very gentle, but very imposing to the neighborhood cats and dogs!

Oh no I can't imagine that I'd be able or even want to be able to handle 200 chickens individually every day...but I only have 16 and really don't want a lot of them, so I can spoil them...til the grandkids come along first of the year (one due in Feb and another in May)!
