Yes he's a preditor!

I have 2 6 month old kittens(brothers). One is a great example of the perfect cat. The other I swear was put on this earth just to p*ss me off!!!

2 weeks ago he attacked one of our 4 week old chicks. She was so small she squeezed out when we went to town. Eventually she died(a week later).

So today im letting the now 6 week olds free range and he slipped out of the house and I couldn't lock him back in and I finally caught him chasing/attacking one of the little chickens.

I just dont get it!! well I mean I get preditor/pray and feline instinct... but his brother knows better and my 2 older cats know better. and even my feral adopted kitty knows better.

I think he just like to press my buttons... he's always being bad like jumping on the table and getting into stuff. He just is incapable of learning...

I'm about ready to shoot him... does he fall under the 'predator' endangering my 'livestock'????

What would you do???

Keep him around and away from the chicks until they're older and better able to peck him. He sounds like he'll be a great hunter to keep the mice and rats down. Heck, he sounds like he would even go after a possum or two. It's not that your other cats "know better", they just are lazier. I have five cats and not all of them are hunters. Some would prefer to just sit in the sun daydreaming. Others won't let a speck of fluff float across the room without attacking it. By the same token I also have a nonsense dog who is a better mouser than half of my cats and a pom who actually caught a mouse in the yard.

Bottom line, every animal is different. So, embrace his traits and use them to your advantage. Just be cautious until your chicks are bigger.

The big 2 are great hunters!!! One even has extra toes!

they bring home mice, rats, lizards in the summer, birds, even 1 or 2 large rabbits! when I got my first chicks the big 2 got 'taught' not to attack THOSE. They havn't ever touched one. but still hunt. this little kid just goes after the easy prey thats in our yard!!!

Do you have a roo?.... let a rooster get ahold of him...i bet he wont chase chickens anymore...

he's in 'kitty jail'!! (our laundry room!) i'd rather let the babies free range then let him go "play" outside! why reward his bad behavior?!

My roosters too friendly(he even likes the little chickens!?)!! we're hoping for an attack roo! actually we told the chick that didn't make it to come back as an attack roo and kick the cats butt!!!

and just so you know i wasn't serious about killing the cat! just venting!!

I'm working on a theory here: what did you name that kitten?

I have a cat that got named Rat as a kitten. He can really live up to his name. Tyger, rip, was the attack cat that protected the property against any dog, stalking and pouncing even Rotties. I'm seriously thinking there's a trend here or something. If this theory is correct, then will re naming change the personality/behavior?

I can blow your theory out of the water. I have 5 kittens and 1 cat (had two cats one ran off a few months ago)

Sabrina - adult hunts and tried to take on a raccoon
Samuel - adult hunter (he took off after a female in heat and hasn't been back)

The kittens
Jasper - loves to hunt (bugs)
Onyx - if it moves it is prey
Jade - has learned crows and ducks are not prey
Opal - was taught that "feathers are friends not food" by the ducks
Topaz - hides as fast as she can unless we are out to protect her

My boyfriend named him Marshall. Like 'The marshal in town' I hate it and call him Martian! His brother is named Chase. and NEVER chases anything! (Tata's and jazzy are the bigger ones!!)

Well We have 8 cats here all were rescued from one situation or another. Some of mine sit and watch the chicks some are very curious. But I have one that I have to really watch around babies. once they are about 8 weeks old she leaves them alone. i have another that curls up in nest boxes and leaves my birds alone but she chases the turkeys (she is a tiny cat too. . . quite funny looking). Another that loves baby time and getting to see them up close (just watches). I had one Boo Boo (RIP) that was the best hunter i have ever seen and she would chase chicks when she was young but when she got over a year old she would even sleep with my broody hens while they hatched babies and never got after them. So try to be patient and a squirt gun or water bottle can go a long way!!!
