I heard mine mighty close to the hens today, but I can not pick it out of the trees.Hoping it dies REAL soon...not by my hands ofcourse as they are federally protected and blah, blah, blah

Sorry for your loss.Plant lots of cover.Hope for the best which is (for me) they move on or die!

We had a VERY close call this morning. I heard one of the girls squawking and looked outside and saw a huge hawk perched on the gate going into the run. I threw a shoe at it very quickly, so i didn't really commit what it looked like to memory. Here is a photo I took several years ago, way before I had chickens of a hawk in our yard. Is it a Cooper's Hawk? Can I shoot it with a BB gun? As a pacifist, this is very disturbing, but I am willing to spare my kids the sight of their beloved chicks torn apart. The kids and I were so freaked out, we scooped everyone up and put them in the coop. Even the chick that NEVER lets us near her let me put her in the coop. Our light Brahma was playing dead so convincingly I started to panic and wondered why her feathers weren't red! They are only 7 weeks old, so we are very lucky the barred rock was sounding the alarm! We are first time chicken owners are have learned our lesson luckily. We have bird netting and I think that it needs to go up. The how-to will be the hard part...

I'll take your word for it. Still ain't interested in eating crow.
You said that with no pun intended right? The guys that I use to hunt with told me about the 3 S's a long time ago! They didn't like that fact that the hawks killed the rabbits before they did! I have one hanging around it was on the ground this morning. I was watching my girls and opened the door and my girls all came running out like they were trying to tell me something and then the lead hen sounded her alarm and they all went running back into the coop. I step out the door to see what they were running from and saw that **** hawk fly away. I can't wait until the leaves are off the trees! So I see where he is going lol! S S S

ML,

The hawk shown is a red-shouldered hawk. In my experience it is very inlikely to be a threat to your chickens unless they are chicks without adults present. Such a hawk is more likely to be targeting rodents that are abundant around your birds. I have one working my property every day and the chickens pay it very little mind. The slightly larger red-tailed hawk will be a different matter.

That is good to know! I don't want to be a lawbreaker! I am a baby when it comes to that sort of thing anyways, I don't even let my boys have Nerf guns! My brother told me Coopers Hawks have been heavily spotted here too. We have kept the girls in the coop unless we are outside, the netting project will be underway ASAP!
