Variable. They'll take different amounts depending on a number of factors. Just offer some and they'll take what they want. I always crumble (not strictly necessary) and give them more than they'll eat in a day or two. They'll regulate their own feeding.

Another important item. Please do not mix the shells in with their feed. Individual birds will need differing amounts, so let them regulate it themselves. For example- pre-layers, older birds and cockerels need less calcium than less-frequent layers who need less than more-frequent layers.

The same rule applies to feeding grit. The calcium and grit should be in separate containers so that they can take as much as they need.

are you talking about chicks? This thread is in the raising chicks section. Egg shells are rich in calcium and require grit to digest-- not a great idea for babies

Doh! I missed that. Yes: do not give shells to chicks. Don't need it at all. Hens don't need them at all until they become layers.

Well, I was thinking anything not laying is a "chick". The ones I was thinking about giving them too are 17 weeks old.
