Hey everyone.

About a week ago I removed a Brahma hen from my coup after noticing her having difficulties walking and being attacked by my other hens.

I initially thought she may have sprained a leg, then found a nasty tail wound, maybe caused by the hens attacking her.

I brought her inside, bathed her in salts, used an anti fungal/ anti bacterial wound spray. I did this for four days. Now we bathe every other day to keep her feathers from pooping up. He skin still has some black scabbing but lots of new pin feathers.

She is eating and drinking, not as much as I would like, her poop is normal too. I did two doses of medistatin just to be on the safe side and also offer her Greek yogurt which she doesn’t much care for.

My problem is that in every way she seems like a healthy bird, good color, good feathers, except she can’t stand up and balance for long, and she’s having difficulty coordinating her movements for preening.

We spend every night in an assisted preening session which she loves, and while I do the work she goes through the motions grabbing my sleeve or towel or anything close to her.

So could she have spinal injuries and how long before I should expect her to start moving around.

We are at a week now

If these neurological symptoms are caused by an avian virus, there's isn't much help for it. If she managed to get herself exposed to a toxin of some sort, she might respond to vitamin E 400iu and selenium therapy. I like to toss in a B-complex tablet to help strengthen the legs.

This is only a wild shot in the dark. As with giving her a few days on Medistatin, this can't hurt, and if it helps, then we can all go out dancing.

Can she use her legs or stand momentarily when you hold her up? I have a hen who was unbalanced and unable to walk without falling backward or falling sideways last winter. She was like that for 5 weeks, and only could stand up and wobble, but not get out of her crate. I had to feed her wet chicken feed, cooked egg, canned cat food, yogurt or cottage cheese and watered down everything. She would only eat out of small bowl place in front of her. She eventually recovered, and walks around an acre everyday.

I hope your hen does not have Mareks disease, but it could be. An injury might be possible as well. I would keep giving her food and water, and use the vitamins that @azygous recommends.

Yes she stands with assistance, moves her legs etc. can prop herself up to poop but generally looses balance at that point. I’ll get some extra vitamins and see how that works

Ok so update on my hen...

I’ve done two days with infant vitamin doses, cat food which she kind of turns her nose up at.

She still loves her baths, blow dry and preening, she talks and is aware of her surroundings.

However, she can just about stand up to stretch, mostly falls over, especially when she stands to poop. She falls over trying to preen, in fact when she attempts to preen she fluffs put her feathers and doesn’t get her beak where it need to be. It seem neurological, almost like a palsy.

Anyone ever tried CBD oils or products with hens. Everything else about her is normal. All except maybe her appetite.

Help please

I've used CBD oils and cannabis leaves for my flock. Apart from their enjoying eating the leaves, I haven't seen that they get any medicinal benefit, but I wouldn't discourage you from experimenting.

I suggest vitamin E oil with selenium. Did I mention that before? It's about the only treatment for neurological disorders that has shown any efficacy. I suggest using it with the CBD.

I picked up 500mg cbd oil, there’s is literally no info out there about dosage for birds! So I’m going with dosage for dogs by her weight. She hates taking her multivitamin by mouth so I hope I can get her to take this. I also have selenium coming tomorrow. It’s all worth a try
