I have a four week old sicilian buttercup. She is sweet as pie...almost too sweet. I am wondering if she might be retarded (is there such a thing in chickens?) She falls asleep in my hand almost instantly, her balance is horrible, i recently was cleaning some dried poo off her bum and she can't reach back to scratch at her bottom with her head, when she tries she falls over...everytime...over and over. It's horribly pathetic to watch. Her feathers on her wings are very sparse, you can see the stalk part of the feather so i was thinking maybe that was part of the issue? I have given electrolytes regularly. She's recently seemed constipated but the balance thing and general rattiness and sweetness have been ongoing. Please help! she's my fav chick:(

Why don't you try giving her some liquid polyvisol without iron. It is possible she may be "off" a bit but sometimes vitamin deficiencies can cause issues as well. I just put a drop in the beak once in the morning and the evening for a couple days and then once a day for a while. You can put it in the water later if it appears to be helping.

I will have to try that. I just figured that any chickens that weren't pretty normal would generally not make it through the first few days. If she's just a little bit of a slow chicken that's not really a big deal but if she's sick or something i'd be so sad. Off to the store for some vitamins!
