Hi All
Last summer Katie's bottom feathers were getting matted with dried poop. We washed her on a regular basis in nice warm water to keep her nice and clean, which she loved. Since then I noticed that propbably with me rubbing she has lost her nice fluffly bottom feathers and is now left with a bare patch and her skin colouring on this patch is very red. It does not look sore and does not seem to bother her. To be frank I dont know what colour a chicken would be if their feathers were plucked so to speak so this could be normal. Any advise please. Any will they grow back?

Many thanks - Regards - Tamz

They should grow back. I have a bare bottomed chicken due to some feather picking and her butt is quite red. The skin is in no way irritated, though. It is just...red. I think some butts are just that color.

Good luck.

I had two hens like this. Bright red bottoms! I though it was from them pecking at the dried poo. Well about 2 weeks ago i went out to check on them and one with a bare bottom was all hudled up in the corner like she was sick. I picked her up and her bottom was raw with a little blood. I'm not sure but i think the others had been pecking at her bottom! I brang her in and soaked her bum. She didn't look so good. She wouldn't eat or drink. I though maybe she was egg bound? I did the warm bath thing and put her on a hot water bottle for the night. She ended up dying in the night. I still don't know why. Anyone know??? I have kept a close eye on the other one. She seems to be doing fine. She did have a spot on her bum that looks kinda whitish. I put some blue lotion on it to keep anyone from bothering it.
