This was a post that I submitted on another BB a couple of weeks ago: "OMG, my heart is STILL pounding. I happened to look out the window about an hour ago and I see a HUGE bald eagle tearing into one of my roosters (Wiley, the white one). I screamed, banged on the window and ran out barefoot screaming my head off. It was about 100 feet from my window, right against the no-climb fence in the front pasture. I heard the other rooster shouting the alarm from the front of the house as I ran over to the fence. Like an idiot, I was only able to grab a book as I ran out - my thought was to throw it at the eagle and I'm glad it did not attack me - a broom would have been smarter. Thank GOD the eagle was frightened by my insane shrieking and flew away and did not take Wiley with him. Wiley ran off to the barn and a flock of crows attacked the eagle and chased it off. I ran in the house and grabbed the phone to call my neighbor (he was out in his field) in case Wiley was badly injured and needed to be put down. I was so afraid to see what he looked like when I went in the barn. There were so many feathers in the field and it looked like he had hit him in another spot in the field and then bounced over to the fenceline as there were 2 spots with big piles of feathers.

I went into the barn and Wiley was in the corner by the hay bales and was pacing around (good sign that he was on his feet). He had lost at least half of his tail feathers, and i could see where he had been grabbed by the back of his neck, but there was no blood and he seemed upset but okay - amazing considering what I saw and all of the feathers. I just keep seeing that huge bald eagle with his wings outstretched, his tail extended and poor Wiley struggling in his talons....

Elvis, the black cochin rooster was wisely hiding under a bush in the front yard and appears to have not been touched at all. unfortrunately they are not used to being apart, so I feel bad that they are not together, but hopefully they can get together later today. I put one of the dogs out to wathc over them.

Whew... I know this stuff happens, but it really shook me up. I am way to attached to my animals. Now I am freaking out that it will come back over the next few days/weeks, and will have to put my chihuahua back on leash. I always worry about the chihuahua, but now even more so.... "

Fast forward to my great new pen that a wonderful handyman built for me. My guys are pacing like convicts in there (not liking the loss of freedom), but they are safe and they do get to roam free when my husband gets out of work at 3pm most days. Pictures to follow as I am a new member and cannot post them yet!

And poor Wiley's bum with lots of missing tail feathers - thank goodness that is all he is missing!

Pretty pen btw. Those are some very loved boys there!

I hear that bald eagle tastes like somewhere between spotted owl and whooping crane.

Shoot, Stew pot, Shut up

just kidding. Glad your roo is alright

wow what a story. glad your rooster is okay. i bet it spooked them out. perhaps it spooked the eagle out too. nice new run tho. ive had scares and have stopped free ranging for awhile, but the chickens get crazy in the run. they all hang out by the door, making all kinds of noises, till they are let out. i havent had a big scare like you have, just go's to remind us all of the over-head-flying objects. i mean predators.

Thanks for the kind words. Wiley is a Wynadott and Elvis is a Black Cochin.

So far so good with the pen - they are out free range for a good part of the day when my husband is home, and in the pen all morning and if we are not home. Have some additional reinforcing to do, but so far so good.

On problem we do have is small birds getting caught in there - they come in during the day when the pen is open and the roos are out, and then have trouble getting out. So far we've been able to shoo the birds out the door without any being injured, but they are stressed and do hit the wire pretty hard at times. A cardinal hen and a morning dove got locked in there overnight and were too exhausted to fly the next morning. They endedup being okay, but I feel bad. I do not want to shut the pen because the roosters do go in there during the day.

Anyway, thanks - we really like it!
