The cds didnt work for me.. I used deflated mylar balloons.. (the big round shiny ones) when they blow in the wind they make a crackling noise.. imitates fire much better than old cds.. just a thought.

Good luck!

Thank you for sharing your experience with the CDs. The balloons are a great idea, and since we're talking along those lines, a windsock or two might be useful too. (although windsocks don't crackle!) I haven't seen the eagle for 5 days... (keeping my fingers crossed)

Oh, did the balloons scare your chickens?

When I first put them out they were nervous.. They wouldnt go anywhere near them. I walked over to the balloon several times while the girls were following me and would touch it or show it to them.. They seemed to get the idea that it wasnt anything to worry about..

I bet a windsock would work great too. Most anything that can flap around in the wind should help deter.

Just keep in mind that once the hawks or eagles find out that those socks or balloons or cds arent a threat... well.. time for plan b.

[[[......Have you had to deal with eagles in Central Oregon? Maybe you can help?....]]]]]

Yes, there is a major Bald Eagle nesting area not more than 2 miles from me. Also Ospreys.

I see the eagles soaring. They will follow the river canyon that goes right at the edge of my property. I've had them turn and do a fly-over and check out the dogs and birds. But they've never bothered me.

I had one land on a fence post next to my pond and take a sun bath. It ignored me and 5 Scottish Deerhounds until we got within 20 feet of it. It was magnificent. We stood there and watched it for about 20 minutes. Then I decided to see how close it would let me get to it.

My birds are in a securely fenced orchard slightly over a half acre in size. They have a secure night run and coop to protect them from the local Great Horned Owls. If the eagles ever decide to try duck, the birds will be moved permanently into the covered runs.

So far, the eagles haven't been interested. I assume that the fishing is excellent and they aren't hungry. Also, I know they can kill a goose, but probably don't want to take one on if there is easier game available.

Eagles don't take calves. A newborn calf is much too big for them. Perhaps they find a dead calf and get blamed for the kill because they are scavengers and will eat dead animals that they find. I have some doubts about the lambs, too.

I LOVE the photo of the photographer with the eagle.

Halo, nice picture! I have my flock in an area freeranging with trees and high brush and weeds-I just stopped taking care of it. My flock spends alot of time in there- more since they saw a hawk grab one of young small pullets.
