Hello everyone, I am relatively new to the chicken world and have a question about my girls. We just got 6 hens last Saturday that are already layers. 1 barred rock, 3 Isa browns (5months ish) and 2 buff orpingtons (just under a year). They all came from the same owner and knew each other before hand. In the last few days i have noticed that my 2 buffs and one of my Isa browns are getting bald in the back of the head behind the comb. It doesn't look like wounds just loss of feathers. 3 out of the 6 girls are laying eggs for us. Between the heat wave we are getting and the stress of a new home i figured that the other 3 were stunted or stressed out. I cant be positive but I'm pretty sure the three that are not laying are the same birds that are getting a bald spot. I also haven't seen them getting picked on at all.. all the birds seem to get along rather well. My question is why are they going bald? could it be the heat or stress? As far as i can tell they do not have mites or lice or any other bugs. Thanks for the help everyone... im still learning lol

I didn't hear mention of a rooster. It is common if you have a rough rooster in the pen because they will hold the feathers on the back of the hen's head while breeding. If you do not have a rooster, are you sure they weren't bald there when you got them? Just a thought.

Thank you for your reply...No i do not have a rooster. And yes im sure that they werent bald when we got them because i checked them out before we bought them and they looked great. Its just been in the last day or two that they have become bald and its just half of them.

Does this sound like mites or stress or just from the heat?

I am not sure. I have only noticed balding on the hens from roos or when moulting, but mine usually don't moult until the shorter days arrive.

Did you ever figure this out? I have a girl balding in the same place.
