Hi. I just got ducklings for the first time. They are 2 white layer ducks and 5 days old. They are very friendly and super happy and healthy. They eat their regular duck food, drink lots of water, and tried a piece of blueberry, strawberry, and grape. (all in moderation). Today one of my little babies threw up on my hand and I believe it was clear but my first instinct was to wipe it off. I read that it is normal if they are nervous. But that wasn't my main concern. They have been getting along extremely well so I don't know if they fought and I'm always near the cage, but the same duckling had a "bald spot" underneath her head and on her neck. I left her alone after looking at it and when I came back, it seemed to have been gone for the most part. My thought is maybe that it was wet and she just has fewer feathers there, but it stayed on her chin area where she couldn't reach so maybe it was just wet? I am really concerned because before they came, my biggest concern was making sure they were happy and healthy. I will attach a photo before it was dry, it doesn't look bloody either. Please help, I have grown to love these babies so so so much. Thanks.

I had a welsh harlequin duckling last summer that developed a little bald spot. I was worried about her, but it turned out to be nothing. Went away and she came into her feathers just fine. As long as you don't see other ducks picking on her I would just wait and see.

Sweet little duckling! I have pekins but am interested in the white layers. I hope you stay on BYC and let us know what you think of them!

Thank you so much for such a quick response. I have been freaking out all evening. And for sure I will try and post more. I am new to this website but most of my advice I have gotten off of this. The two babies are so so sweet and are little sleepy heads :)

Bald spots are common with young ducklings, nothing to be concerned about.

Are you providing grit since you are feeding treats?
I am completely new to this and I believe this is good for them, I will attach an image of exactly what I am feeding them. Thanks for the help! :)

if you have any suggestions, I am completely open to anything. I want to give them the best treatment possible.

That feed is perfect, I was asking if you were feeding them grit since you are feeding them treats, if you arent the fibrous material could get stuck in their gizzard or further down the track.

Oh ok, sorry I wasn't exactly sure what grit was and what the best kind is for them. I will definitely look into that. Is there a specific brand or kind you suggest?

Manna Pro oyster shells? is that good for them? and does it go with their food or separately?
