Hi, I am new here! I am struggling with my hens and bald spots on their butts. Our lavender orphington doesn’t have any. The others are bleeding even on their butts. They are all about four years old. We had none now 8. All ranging from Americauna’s to leghorns to black and white barred. What kind of protein? I have read more protein is needed.

We feed them the most expensive layer feed at the feed store. They are in about a 10 x 20 coop all shaded. We are in Reno and very hot. I read beans are good and to increase protein. But what kind?

Protein won't stop or cause the bleeding ... But will help feathers to regrow ...

Sounds like your fluffy butt Orpington is pecking and pulling out there feathers ...

What is the protein percentage on the feed your giving them?

We just got the one that has more protein today. I will have to check.

I'd just get a higher protein feed, it'll will be cheaper and not throw off their nutrition. Beans are toxic unless cooked.

Weird question but can we have a photo of a butt please ?
I am thinking feather mites ? What do you other guys think ?

We took one in and no mites just pecking issues. I will take a picture.
