This is my poor chicken with her balding head and missing feathers. Because it has been over 100 lately all my chickens have been free ranging outside all day everyday . I have noticed a lot of feathers around the trees where they hang out. But she is the only one with a bald head . Does anyone know what caused it??? Thank you

Hi, here are my opinions-
I am guessing the following:

  1. Do you have a rooster? If so, this may be a cause.
  2. It may be early, but there is a strong possibility she may be molting.
  3. Where is she at the pecking order? (Top meaning she pecks others, bottom meaning she's the one of who is being pecked).
These are the possibilities. There are a few options... Even though there are that many options it could be as simple as just molting.
I have a hen, Plymouth Rock, that has had that same thing all the way down her neck every year about this time, she was molting. By the way the feather-spuds look on yours neck... I think she's molting. :)

Good luck! God bless. She is a beautiful hen by the way.

Sincerely,
-The Angry Hen
