Wow, I had no idea a chicken could be so BEAUTIFUL... I think I'd much rather have a Blue Orpington than an Andalusian.

Perhaps I'll get a broody hen next year... then I can find out who to get Blue Orp eggs from .

After reading all of the nightmares from those who hatch their own, I don't think I could go through it.

In the olden days farmers did have incubators. They may not have been electric but they had them. There are many stories of chicks hatched on the warming ovens of old stoves and using hot water bottles as well as the oil or coal burning woodbator boxes. Electricity just made easier.

Letting a hen do it might up your odds a bit, but you still have to deal with the fact blue orps don't seem to ship well.

Boy, dont I wish! I'd love to go the 'broody route', but out of a good sized flock of different breeds, even some known to be broody, I've only had two hens in the flock ever go broody on me.

I have 1 HEN right now that she is just getting OUT of he rbroody episode . NO EGGS , NO ROOSTER , she just insiste d on SITTING in teh nest for 3 full weeks . NOW she is ok , BUT has NOT started laying again YET . I read where it can take 3 weeks after they broody to lay again .

NOW , CHECK THIS OUT ....... I was told to DUNK her in a bucket of water and she would COME OUT of that broody state . SORRY , just did not have the heart to do that . JUST made sure she had food and water WHERE she could reach and LET her have her hissy fit .

Thanks for sharing. those are some great looking pullets. Am I mistaken or is the eye color on the black cockeral gold. It may be the way the light is shining.

No, you're not mistaken - they are most definitely gold and I have another one just like him. Good news I also have one with black eyes

Every silkie Bantam I have ever owned went broody at least once each year. They are awesome. If you want broody get some silkies if not for that purpose alone. they get along great with other chickens especially other bantams.
