Banding chickens, what kind of leg ring and why?

The big problem with the zips is that you have to cut them off. Which puts a chick in danger of breaking a leg or cutting them. That is why I suggested the toe punch. That you can do right out of egg and keep track threw growth till you band older. Here is a link to a toe punch chart which I got off here a few months ago.

I wanted to do that this year but could not get my toe punch till too late.

I use spirals or zip ties on the young birds but you have to watch them as they grow.

If found the smaller spirals are not as stiff and sharp as the larger ones.

Then I use plastic bandettes...the clip ones on the serama and the wrap around for the bigger birds. I really like these, they are easy to put on and take off, come in lots of colors and numbers.

So you actually punch some skin out of the webbing of the chicks feet???

did you consider wing banding? we use wing bands. we can then identify each individual chick by their number.
