Bands on Feathered Legs?

How/Where do you put metal/plastic numbered bands on feather legged bantams for breeding/showing purposes?

I use the plastic spiral kind for showing. leg bands inhibit feather growth when left on too long, and this kind is easy to remove.
For a permanent breeding record, wingbands work nice, but I have never used them. Kind of like eartags on cattle.

Ive heard the spiral kind can go into the leg of a growing chicken.

I might try wing bands but not sure..
