Bannanas For Your Chickens or Even Your Family?

So glad you posted that, GardenerGal! I for one had no idea!! It never even occured to me...

It makes me happy to see people speaking up and paying attention! It seems we should care very much how insects react to something...i had read that flys do not recognize margerine as a food. My worms freaked over a bananna. And things that poison insects...well... That just cannot be good for us....

There's lots going on with our food that we don't know about. Just recently we've been hearing about chicken nuggets made from pink slime, and did you know that corn has been genetically modified so that it can survive being sprayed with Round-Up? The Purina rep even admitted to me that their chicken feed is made with Round-Up Ready corn (and soy) because it's the only kind grown and available in large enough quantities for their factories. Recently, the FDA approved Round-Up Ready corn for human consumption to be sold in supermarkets this summer. Needless to say, I avoid the supermarket produce department and actually buy very little there. I buy most fresh foods from local farmers that I've vetted. I also grow much of my own ... including eggs!

For more information on your food, read stuff by Michael Pollan and Joel Salatin, among other authors.

Round-up ready corn and soy have been on the market for humans in the US for years....almost every processed food has some GMO corn in it.

Correct. But, until recently, RR corn was *only* in processed food and animal feed. Now, it's in the produce department being sold raw, in the husk, to prepare at home. It's becoming more prevalent and difficult for the unaware shopper to avoid. How many people stop to think whether the corn the bring home from the grocery store has been sprayed with Round-Up?

If you drink soda, if you eat most commercial cereals, if you eat canned chili, if you use non-dairy creamer, if you eat most ice cream, commercial pizza, etc you have consumed Round-up Ready corn or soy. You must be hyper-vigilent to avoid it. But yes, GMO sweet corn in newly on the market.

Unfortunately, due to large corporate influence, the US requires no labeling for GMO products.

Thank you for clairfying; I should've specified *sweet* corn has been ok'd for sale to the general public.

That's why I don't eat the things you listed and am pushing for labeling, so that we can exercize our freedom to choose ... a right most other Western countries already have. If you want to learn more, check out this site:
