she still has alot of pin feathers. Ive heard cochins take awhile to mature soo i guess ill see what she turns out looking like. Even if shes just pet quality i still think shes very pretty

You just have to be happy with her!! I tried to talk a show Judge into selling me some mottled D'Uccles the other week...I went to him hunting the breeder and he said it was him...now he was working a table and not judging that day but had his badges on!Bragged on how ling he had been showing and judging...then he started talking about the gal in tennesse that always wins and he even packs up if he gets to a show and she is there...well I am glad I did not buy from the "Judge" who claimed he had the best except for her...because my D'Uccle stock is all from her!! She just doesn't do mottleds but I let her tell me who to buy my eggs that I am getting in the morning from!! But remember some people are brutally honest in thier opinion because they think they are helping...IDK if he/she has cochins but I raise many colors and I am new to them but I have spent alot of time with show winning breeders and they are who taught me to be patient with them growing out!! And they are the most silly and sweet lil birds!!

I think you're a little confused. I wasn't criticising you I was criticizing a chicken. No licensed judge is going to point out this bird's pros-she hasn't any other than she appears healthy & well cared for but that doesn't make her a show bird. She's not going to grow out into something she's not.
Frankly if you're so insecure that you regard a critique of a chicken, that you requested, as a personal attack maybe you shouldn't ask such questions. Maybe next time you should stipulate that you only really want to hear positive comments. Not sure how that would be helpful or instructive but apparently it's what you were looking for.
You asked a simple question: is this bird show quality? She's not. That's not debatable, it's a fact. What I said was true. According to the Standard she shouldn't be placed she's that poor. Still talking about the chicken not you. I'm sure you're a lovely person.

ok well not all judges are the same, U dnt have to me so harsh about it. i did ask for opinions but really? She may be bad but theres nicer ways of putting it. In the 4 years ive been showing in FFA i have never had a judge talk to me like u do. Usually judges have pros and cons about the bird. Not just shoot it down. Usually the judges are kind and tell whats good about the bird and what it could be improved. Im srry but ur comment was a little rude to me. My bird my not be the best bird but that dnt mean shoot her down in one blow and basically say shes crap. Im happy that u share ur honest opinion about my bird but please just watch how u put things because people do take offense to comments like that when they are proud of there bird show quality or not.

Stephanie, I don't show chickens, but I know enough to know that show Cochins look more like feathered bowling balls than chickens. They are extremely round looking. If you do some googling you will find photos of show Cochins and you will see what I mean.

Of course you can enter her. Just don't get your hopes too high.

She could be shown in the junior handler class, if you are eligible and if she will cooperate with being hand shown. She could also be shown at the county fair if your only goal is to get free passes to the fair.

I have to agree with the poster above. Don't ask for an evaluation if you don't want to hear opinions. It would not be a kindness to tell you that your bird is world class and then have you be disappointed when she doesn't win. Better, in my opinion, to encourage you to develop your eye and to learn how to compare the SOP to live birds. It would be nice for you to end up as a top breeder of winning Cochins. That wont happen if you are left to think that birds who don't meet the SOP are the best available. You simply must learn to tell the difference if you want to grow as a breeder.

Stephanie,
My initial thought was perhaps she's not 100% Cochin. If she is, "filling in" as she matures will not change her type (shape). personally, I would not consider showing or breeding her. But I would certainly enjoy her as a pet - and eggs are always delicious no matter the quality of the hen!

Here's the link to the Cochins International website - lots and lots of pictures that you can use for comparison. And if you are serious about showing Cochins, buying a copy of the SOP should be your next investment.

Ok thanks. im still going to enter her in the next show this summer, its only $2 an entry. And eatiher they place or they dont. Going to take some of my other birds also. Going to take her just to see what the judge says. Ive shown birds before and have some good ones. Shes my first bantam cochin and i was thinking about breeding her but if the judge doesnt say anything really good about her im going to sell her. Thanks everyone

You live close to my area where did you get her? I'm taking some birds to the Escalon auction next Friday if it's not raining. They are my culls hatched last spring and 1000 times better

I bought her as an egg from a local breeder. I bought 12 eggs and shes the only one that hatched. Was hoping to get some good show birds but u dnt always get good ones from eggs.

Your girl is cute but I don't think shes a pure cochin, she looks mixed to me. Are you looking for something to show at the Fair this summer? I can hook you up with something much better.

Go to the ABA website and look at pictures of bantam Cochins that are good representatives of the breed. It will help you compare your bird before you go to a show so you know what to expect. If you haven't been to a show before, you'll be amazed at how different the other Cochins look. As a reference, I thought this girl was beautiful, but she placed last at every show under every judge!
