Bantam Cochins...pullets??

Thanks again! She's a nice, calm little girl. I picked her up totally on impulse at a feed store in another town. She was so much smaller than all the other chicks and I was running a heat lamp for some other babies at the time, so...

Now, about yours. First picture--hysterical. Looks like a cult, or teen-age girls worshipping some guy named Justin! I don't think they realize how pretty and special they are. Get up Girls! They have that beautiful Cochin roundness. I don't know if I'll get that with my Bantam or not.
Second picture--Your Cochin Roo is stunning. That kind of coloring feels like a direct connection to a different time--don't know if I'm saying that right, but it's like, so many things change, but I feel like if we could visit Europe 200 years ago, we might see a roo there just like him.
Third picture--Yeah, he's a manly man! Love his legs--looks like he is wearing Ugg boots.
No problem

I don't compliment for the sport of it, I only say it when I mean it

I really like her.
I only have Standard Cochins - but bantams would be so fun to have

They all fawn over my barred rock cockerel... While my cochin rooster prefers the ducks.

But he sure is pretty!

Here he is at 6 weeks old! So red in the face.

LOL!! Well I got a Light Brahma and Barred Rock two years ago from the feed store for eggs...and THEN I found out there were LOTS of different varieties...I then wanted Buff and Lavender Orpingtons...but my coop wasn't really big enough to put in new chicks with my hens so I couldn't get anymore. Well I JUST got hubby to finally build a new coop for me so I went a bit crazy!! And you are right I am thinking of getting another Blue Bantam Cochin this week...I just LOVE them and my little Buff is still under a heat lamp for the next week or two and I need to put the Lavender out 24/7 with the rest so the Buff NEEDS a friend!! That is how I justify my addiction!! I would have 50 if I could...Maybe one day. I have my hands full with 7 horses and 7 dogs!! LOL Hubby wants to kill me I'm sure :he
I started with four.. I have over 60 now :/ Crazy? Probably lol

Aww thanks so much! :D My boy was an impulse. I went there to get ducks.. He lived with the ducks.. I had to. It was meant to be. He has the funniest crow, and his egg song is priceless. Bantam cochins definitely have roundness! They have a bigger butt I find. Example: Large Fowl Bantam I find the bantams to be more round! How big are the bantam cochins? I have never seen one in person. I know my LF cochins are huge. My rooster is 6 months old and bigger than my year old barred rock already.

Who is big for a barred rock - and he's the size of my miniature poodle.

OMG! Perhaps we should have coffee some time. Or better yet, tea! I'm in Vista. And I need to bring you the cockerel I promised you

We have some things in common...the most alarming is that I also have 7 dogs (although one is leaving tomorrow). I wanted a Barred Rock, but started with two Silkies, a Light Brahma, and some assorted chicks. In fact, I wanted only Barred Rocks. I thought it would look messy to have unmatching chickens running around. Well, twelve chickens later (and picking up two more today), I still don't have my Barred Rock. But they have some at the feed store, and since I'm going to need to run a heat lamp for the two I'm getting today, it's either pick up a BR, OR I noticed someone had some Black and Lavender Ameraucana chicks on CL, and since it's starting to look like 3 out of 4 of my lavenders are cockerels....OR I noticed someone with newly hatched Seramas, and they have a really gorgeous rooster so if any of the babies turned out like HIM it would be so cool... The BR would be $5, the Ameraucana are $10 each and I'd want 3, the Seramas are $15 each and I'd want AT LEAST three... my budget is $0. Quick, who is good at chicken math? What should I do????

Barred Rock!! Go with what you have ALWAYS wanted!! What's $15...LOL!! So great to meet someone else in SD :) No more roo's for me!! I have three I think and don't know what to do...

wow those standards are huge (my parents fbcm is huge) and that is why i prefer my bantams over those guys lol plus i need something that my toddlers can hold with ease and not basically ride around lol

I don't know how big the Bantam Cochins get, but Cupcake looks really tiny next to the others. She's in with a couple of Silkie mixes who are also young and small, but also two 17-week-old Marans who are pretty good size. And she's still pretty young.

Your Cochin Roo will be huge and stunning, I'll bet. I saw some pictures of furry legged chickens on the internet somewhere, probably feathersite. I don't remember for sure what they were, but I think Cochins. Anyway, I couldn't believe what I was seeing--they looked liked they had human legs! Like men wearing pants, and chicken costumes on top. And they were HUGE. Luckily, Cochins are sweet chickens. I would be scared of a rooster like that if it wasn't friendly.

I see what you mean about the roundness on the bantams. But your girls look like fluff balls. Also, your poodle is cute--sure it's not a Silkie?

That's Cupcake on the left. The one on the right is a Silkie mix, about 11 weeks old.

My roo is scared of his own shadow :P That's how I like 'em - at least until they are a year old and I can trust their hormones better. My girls are very sweet - especially Honey :love :gig My poodle loves the chickens. I have 3 dogs, 3 cats and 60+ chickens - oh wait.. there are the geese, turkeys and ducks as well :th You need a barred rock! BEST BREED EVER! They are so sweet. Friendlier than the cochins (in my opinion). But wait.. What happens when you cross the two?!

BAM! :D This is a pullet I'm keeping that is a mix of my barred rock roo and my biggest/fattest cochin hen, Mabel. She is so round for being a mix, and the feathers are nice on the legs! I just love them. They were the friendliest chicks from the get-go! *More Pictures**

OOOOHHHHH I like those Barred Rock Cochins Blends! Now how do you like that term, "blend" instead of "mix"? I picked that up at the local animal shelter. Makes them sound custom, rather than like oopsies. I think, as adviced on this thread, I will get the barred rock chick to go with the other two I'm picking up tonight. I probably only need on Barred Rock, but we'll see. Here is the rooster that gave me nightmares. It IS from feathersite, and I hope this isn't a copyright infringement.

Okay, just to conclude this chapter of my chicken obsession story, I picked up the little Easter Egger and BO last night. Healthy and beautifully cared for, friendly and calm. Decided to rule out the expensive chicks I was considering (anything over $5 apiece--not saying the birds weren't worth those prices, just that I didn't need anything specific that would justify spending more than $5). Took Jazzer's advice and went to get the Barred Rock. They also had Gold Laced Wyandottes and Delawares, so I got one of each. Hatch date on these three was 6/12, and the ones from last are about the same age. So now I need to get everybody set up. That will keep me busy (and out off of Craigs List and out of the feed store) for awhile...
