Hubby and I have 9 Bantams this year and want to build them a coop of their own so they don't get bullied by the "big girls". We have 2 Silkies, a Frizzle, 4 Cochins, and 2 Bantam Ameraucanas. How tall and how much floor space do you think it needs to be? We build A-frame tractors, so we can easily move them around the yard.

Thanks!

I don't have bantam breeds, but the rule of thumb is at least 2 sq. ft. per bird for bantams (4 sq. ft. for LF) of housing space and 5 sq. ft. of run space if they are not freeranged at least part-time. Based on that guideline, you'd want 18 sq. ft. of housing (maybe 4 x 5?) and 45 sq. ft. of run space (9 x 5?). That sounds like it'd end up being pretty long for a tractor, doesn't it?? 13 x 5??? Of course you can play with the numbers to make it work for you...

They will be allowed to free range during the day, when the big girls are in their pen.
