Bantam Duck Page

You said it, I think they are just adorable, but another breed, another pen, and most of all another love. I don't think that 10 minimum is going to hold me back much longer

Yep, that's a good Call for ya!

That "stunted hobble" is due to tiny, short legs + fat, round body=MAJOR duck waddle.
Not all ducks appeal to all people, that's why I'm glad there are different kinds.
Of course, to those of us that are such big Call enthusiasts, our first thought is, "Yay, more Calls for us!".

Ya'll need to stop talking about those silkie ducks-I keep going over there and looking at them and they are just beautiful/adorable(especially those grays)! I just don't NEED another breed on this farm! Good thing they have a minimum of 10 or else, believe me, a pair would be on their way to Texas at the earliest possible date!
The EIs are beautiful-I satisfied that urge(sort of) with Self-Black Calls.

I agree, these are cute ducks. Some of the ducks that were there couldn't even quack, they made a whistling like sound. Some just didn't want to move, I didn't watch the judging though. I have to say over all the most well balanced birds were the whites, I didn't see these over exagerated features in the whites, mostly the greys, khakis, and some other colors. The butterscotch were nice looking as well.

okay, I want to get my BS together get serious and down to business, it's almost time, got some domestic eggs today, so I have read this and that and him and her and I recommend and My opinion, would a couple of you senior callies please take a minute, even if you have to type in word and copy and paste
celebrate.gif
that is my opinion

from the start/begging of your process to hatch a call, the begging with incubator and begging if you use hen, step by step to that duck goes to the brooder. I want to have a better planned thought than the last two failure season, I think my biggest problem is at the hatch time when they don't come out the shell, I candle them and I don't think I am understanding exactly to when to go in after them. I can see the bill down at the large in of the egg, but when I open that egg alot of times it has broken that sac skin, but the bill will look like it is pecking trying to come out, so just to help us newbie, or 3rd season callies, can somebody take the time to submit your entire process, and I am not good with this terminology like egg sac, germ, etc., so try to do this in us laymens terms

I will learn these terms as we go, I promise

I may let some silky ducks go around May if you guys are really interested. Don't know who or the price of them yet, but they'll be fully feathered out by then. Just need time to see what I've got and what I want to keep.

I know what you are talking about, because while I appreciate a good quality show Call, I have seen some at shows that are very extreme and turn me off as well. When they start looking overdone to where their parts don't fit well together into a whole picture, that's where I think things get too extreme. When I learner judged with horses, I was taught that the whole animal should present a pleasing picture and fit well together, and not have a "Mr. Potato Head" kind of look going on where certain parts just jump out to your eye to the point of distraction and not fitting with the big picture of the animal, and that is how I feel about ducks even though they are way different types of animals. When I see a Call that is overly cheeky to the point of looking sick with a sinus infection or like the duck is not able to see over his own cheeks, or the legs are such that it can barely walk, that definitely looks overdone to me. Thankfully, there are judges out there right now in the poultry hobby who will not pin animals in the ribbons when they start looking overdone to the point of disability, and I hope that continues. Several breeds of horses have congenital problems that go along with being overbred for certain traits, and I would hate to see that happen en masse to these cute little birds.

I was In charge of the waterfowl section of the show mentioned and I have bred Calls since 1972 and there were no overdone Calls at that show. I didn't see any that could not breed and reproduce. When one is used to looking at very poor Calls, good ones do look deformed I suppose. There are some cretin Calls around, but there were not any at the PPBA Stockton show here in CA. The overly done ones take care of theirselves....they can't reproduce.

I wasn't at the show in Stockton, CA so I can't speak to that, and I wasn't referring to that show but was talking in general about shows I have attended. I have seen very good ones and also very overdone ones win at other shows, however, and have even had a few of the overdone ones confirmed by their owners as being sterile, which is unfortunate when they have placed well.
