Bantam Duck Page

I do love the little call ducks I saw at the fair. That is what inspired me to decide to build an aviary. Just how loud are they, though? I live in the city and have a large yard, but the aviary would be about 50 feet from neighbors' homes. Would they be too disruptive?

Honestly, Call hens can get pretty loud. Not sure they are the breed from you if you live in town.

Now if you just want some Calls, the males are really quiet.
I'm not sure on the BEIs, I've never had any so I don't know how loud they are.

The guy to ask would be Lou Horton; you can Google his site at Acorn Hollow Bantams. Lou lives in an urban area and raises some of the best BEIs in the country in his yard.

Lou also had Calls for a long time, so I think he is in the best position to advise, and he's a nice guy who will talk ducks with you.

Some strains of female BEI's are every bit as loud as Call duck females, and some strains are not. I have both kinds here. I have raised BEI's since the early 70's. In the early years BEI's were not loud at all. I would guess that there is Call blood in the loud ones.

Hey Walt,

These new guys are definetely chatty!! The females are pretty noisy, they crack me up. They almost have a personality more like a runner. How do you feel about the white, I have the book that I think references you. Oh and boy do they like mud!! Our calls will play in it a little bit, but the BEI's LOVE it. Course they came from a fairly small completely inclosed pen.

Also gryeyes, I sent you a pm to see if you still needed to find a home for your duckies.

The white in the females? You have to have that to keep the green sheen. It usually only happens to the females. I have some that are almost all white now.

Sooo.... the BEI's may be too loud for a back yard, too?

Or can someone recomend a strain of more quiet ones? They are so pretty! How about Teal's? Are those considered bantams, or just small ducks?
