I have had my calls in pens above the ground for about 10 years like they do in New York. I have found if I have them on the ground the local dogs will be over in a month or so and find away to kill them and they all want to be about as big as a bear when they show up. Huge dogs.

If you leave them out in the open in a good pen then you got to worry about hawks during the day and owls at night getting them.

They are just to hard for me to rasie down here in south so I raise them in above the ground cages on wire.

I hope to build some pens on the ground chicken tractor type about four feet by eight feet this year to let the young ducks grow on grass.

I will have a small tub of water about 10 gallons of water for them with a hose on a timer that puts in fresh water every two hours.

Thats my goal for this year. I was at Charlie Hodums place about ten years ago and he had above ground breeder pens and raised his ducks in a large 100 by 100 foot pen with netting over the top to keep the hawks and owls out. that worked well for him. He had them running around and they had play pools that kids swim in for thier water. bob

I just wanted to add my calls do fly, but don't leave the fenced in yard. I still clip a few feathers, enough to keep them from getting up too high.. They are in a house at night.
But if you have a lot of predators in your area, the above ground pens would be safest! In fact, mine will be in those types for breeding purposes..

What determines if a breed is a bantam, is it strictely the size of the bird? What size would be no longer considered a bantam breed? For example is there a max weight?? Sorry if this seems a stupid question.
