This is absolutely why I don't want to ship anyone ducklings.

Linda, I'm really sorry this happened to you.
I hope people will take what happened to you and use it as a learning experience. As dicey as shipping Call eggs can be, this is why we don't ship ducklings.
I've lost customers because people ONLY want ducklings and they want them shipped. That isn't a service we offer.
I sure hope you get your money back, this is just awful.

It's not so much a quality of stock issue...Holderread says in his book that certain bantam ducklings have a higher metabolism rate than other ducks and therefore don't do well over the time it takes to ship them. Which is why so many breeders of bantam ducks simply refuse to ship ducklings and don't use X number of excuses.

I am very sorry for your loss...this is a horrible thing to happen to anybody with ducks of any stripe!

Also makes you wonder if some shipping locations do play a part in it. I mean there are hubs. I live near Atlanta and Chattanooga and a lot of shipping goes thru Atlanta , then out to say Chattanooga, so if you are closer to a hub it's faster and safer. May be the same of where it's shipped from. Also the day shipped. That is why most only ship on Mondays or Tuesdays so not to get stock stuck over the weekend. That said. I got birds from California to Ga. great with no problem, both fromHolderreads and had 5 mini-ducks in the shipment . I only lost one runner in the shipment and it was an "extra", but I know Runners are " genetically fragile". I did notice Sandhill Preservation strongly suggest shipping Express over priority for Runners and expensive geese, and turkey poults , where as everyone else uses priority mail saying it doesn't make a difference.....maybe their location has something to do about it, and they have had bad results shipping priority. I do notice that there are certain small ducks Holderread won't ship certain bantams as babies...says they don't ship well.

Hi Bob! So happy to find this!!

I'm starting out with seriously breeding calls (grey to start) for the show ring. I just wanted to write something so it will be easier to keep up with the thread in the future. I lurk on the heritage thread. I'm the type to absorb information and file it away when warrented, rather than join in the conversations.

I have already joined NCBA and I guess put the cart before the horse there because I don't have the birds yet. lol

Ok. I talked too much. Just wanted to say thank you for starting this thread!!!

I thought holderreads was in Corvallis, Oregon???
or do they just travel through?

The thing is, shipping anything at any time is risky, and shipping lives has to be well executed for good results, no matter where you are. I would always use the fastest shipping method, but even so, there is always risk.

Hey guys, my Butterscotch Calls did pretty good at the Delmarva Show yesterday~ hen got 1st and drake got 2nd. Same drake that took Reserve Ch. Colored Call last year at the same show. Go figure.
