They get to be chickens straight away as they peck and scratch in it, they may eat it but it won't do them any harm, chicks need grit and sand works as grit. And also with having soil in there it will build up there immunity to cocci so it Is beneficial

I have sand in the chicken palace as well so it gets them used to what they will be living with

I use dirt and straw in my coop. my bantams are great layers...more so in spring and summer. I keep a light on in the winter, but the laying drops to about every other day or so. The Cochins like to go broody in summer and don't lay then but if I keep taking eggs they quit setting...my d'Anvers are tiny but lay well and a good size bantam egg for their size. I just use 2 bantam eggs when a recipe calls for 1. So I guess you'll have to wait and see how your do
