I have a 2 year old mixed breed bantam who has progressively become weaker to where she is no longer walking. It started several weeks ago after coming out of a broody spell. At first she seemed lethargic and sleeping a lot. Her poops looked normal (no diarrhea or blood) but often had undigested whole grains in it. She was eating & drinking fine. She has grit & oyster shell available free choice. I separated her from the other chickens since they started picking on her and treated with enrofloxyn for 7 days and then ivermectin for worms. None of the other chickens are showing any symptoms.

Eventually she started becoming wobbly and falling over easily and getting weaker. She has a very prominent keel bone and feels very thin. I've checked for egg binding and can't feel any other abdominal/crop issues that I can tell. Her crop is full at bedtime and empty in the morning. I did a treatment round of both tri-sulfa (trimethoptim/sulfaquinoxaline) and Corrid for possible coccidiosis (separately).

She doesn't walk any more but she is more alert and she eats really well. She's not currently on any medication and the last 4 days I've been giving her a nutrient dense mix of layer crumbles, vitamins including a b-complex, hen boost probiotics, scrambled egg, crushed cat kibble all mixed with a little warm water to make a mash. She loves this and gobbles it up. I also add on the side some small chopped watermelon, because she's not been drinking from the waterer, to get some fluids in her. Her poops still have undigested food in them and smell very bad.

I've been trying some "physical therapy" with her several times a day, stretching and moving her legs. She has some strength since she pushes against my hands when I lift her legs up & down.

So far she's not improving much. Oh, also, she has not laid an egg since before the broody spell- more than a month ago. She previously was a good layer.

Does anyone have more ideas on what the problem could be? The treatments I've tried aren't helping and I really don't want to lose her, she's the sweetest little thing! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thx :)

She has had lot of powerful antibiotics, so it doesn’t sound she has a treatable infection. I would get her on some probiotics to get her gut bacteria back to normal. Probios powder is a brand in feedstores and Gro2Max is a good one from Amazon. Sometimes we cannot know what the problems are until we can do a necropsy after death. Unfortunately cancer and reproductive issues, such as salpingitis and internal laying can cause problems in hens over two. Do her legs seem paralyzed or can she move them? She might benefit from a chicken chair or sling to get her upright and able to reach food and water. Here is a link with pages of home made slings and chairs:

Thanks for the response. She is on Hen Boost Probiotics currently (today is day 5): https://www.amazon.com/Animal-Health-Solutions-Probiotics-Hydration/dp/B00FBRJGFW.
It has probiotics, vitamins and electrolytes.
I am afraid that it may be something that's not treatable, but I have to try.
She does move her legs and pushes against my hand when I hold it under her feet, so she not completely paralyzed, but can't walk or get around. Thanks for the sling links, I will look into rigging something up for her.
I'm guessing (hoping) maybe a nutrient deficiency due to some intestinal infection since there is undigested food in her droppings...? If so, how long do you think before I see any improvement?

You could just give the hen boost every other day or every third day. Sometimes undigested food might be from necrotizing enteritis, but either of the antibiotics and the Corid should have treated that. Hard to know without a gram stain or vet. The cause of the lameness is hard to know. I had a lame hen who could not walk without falling over for 5 weeks. She basically stayed in a basket while I fed her mushy foods and vitamins twice a day, and then one day decided that she could walk again.

Thanks for that. Gives me some hope. :fl

Here's the sling chair I set up for her:
