Bantam Maturity Question

I'm definitely expecting the Sebright to be my biggest challenge. Attitude wise, it acts like a cockerel. The way it usually stands up so straight and tall, it's very loud, and yesterday, it called attention to a very large beetle crawling towards them during their outside time.
I wouldn't count attitude for much at this age. Some of my surliest chicks turned out to be pullets.

I intend to sell some, but I have no idea how I'm gonna part with them, lol.
I can imagine! I've already told my husband that if we end up with too many roosters, we're just going to have to get more straight run chicks come spring and hope for females, or find some pullet bantams, lol. I can't imagine having to find them new homes.

Order/pick from bins labeled Pullets. You're less likely to end up with a bunch of males.

If you have a bantam cochin, one of mine started laying at 17 weeks and 5 days. I have another one about to start at 20 weeks. By comparison, my production red large fowl took 21 weeks, and my Black Australorps SIX MONTHS! 😆

Mine definitely seem to be on an accelerated timetable.
Haha wow! The Australorps took their time.

It would be perfect if the d'Uccle is my only boy and the other 3 are girls. Alas, we don't live in that kind of chicken world. 😆

I've never seen bantams sold as pullets where I live. I know you can order them online sexed though. But the local TSC and RK both usually have quite a few options to choose from that are pullets.

That's good to know! I'd rather it be a pullet for sure. I've also read that in general, Sebrights can be kind of attitudinal.
I wish I'd listened when I was told that about RIRs . . . wow they are tempermental. I can pet/handle them, but if I don't handle each, the way that they like, I'll get pecked and wing throttled.

What they don't know is . .they'll be getting replaced when these chicks are old enough to go in with the boys.

I've heard that about them as well. I ordered my Orpingtons from Meyer, and they're arriving at the end of next month. I also ordered their free homestead helper rooster chick. They don't tell you what breed it is, but through my research (endless Google rabbit holes), I've found that many people who get the HH free chicks end up with RIRs, and none of the experiences are good. So I'm not expecting that one to be in our family all that long if so.

I hadn't put that together quite yet, but you're right. I guess they're too small at hatch to safely vent sex, which makes sense when you think about it.
