Hmm...toughy. It would kinda depend on what I am aimin for. If I am deciding on a breed for eggs, I'd go with a large fowl. If I am showing, I'd pick bantam. For breeding purposes...a few of each.
DEFINITELY Large Fowl...can't picture using about 8 eggs for a three egg omelette. With all my big girls..I only need two.
I keep Silkies but never bring an egg into my house...lol.
I doubt I will ever own any other Bantams. While some of them are really pretty..I believe they fall into the category of "cute but useless."
Some folks really like them..but they are not for me. To each their own I guess.
I find large fowl are better for meat and egg laying purposes, and bantams are easier for show (washing large fowl before a show is tedious at best.) Kids can handle bantams easier for 4-H and showmanship too.
Don't know yet, have had large for 16 years, just got some bantam rocks in June. I have always kept about 12 chickens & have struggled with using or getting rid of all the eggs. So far the bantams are in the tractor coop & are pretty destructive to the grass, but then there are 25- 8 week olds and I will pare down to 8 soon. I will be happy using 2 eggs to one big egg, as I only sell to family. My 11 hens (3 nonlayers) still give me too many eggs. They always seem crowded, even though they have over 10 ft. outside space. Coop is plenty big at 64 sq. feet. I am thinking next year I will keep only 6 large fowl & my 8 bantams and still have too many eggs. Time will tell how well the bantams lay.
I love my variety of large fowl hens, but my bantam cochins and silkies are my favorites. They're SO darn cute! My silkies aren't laying yet, but my cochins lay an egg every day when they're not broody. And BOY do they go broody. I can't keep them out of the nests. But that's good, cuz that's why I bought them.
I prefer bantam araucanas to LF araucanas and bantam cochins to LF cochins, but I don't really think I'd want to waste my time with bantam Marans or bantam welsummers or bantam Barnevelders. Ya gotta have birds in all sizes!
