Well... I took him to the veterinarians today. His foot just fell off. It was apparently Bumblefoot. I do not know now what to do with my poor little guy. One foot. My chickens run free. He isn't going to be running any time soon. I hope he manages on one foot....

My banty rooster, a Belgian D'Uccle has a cut on his foot that runs around the side down the bottom. It's been a week now. He will not stand on it. I've been cleaning it, putting triple antibiotic ointment on it, wrapping it with bits of baby diaper and then using elasticized bandage to keep it all on and dry. I was wondering if it could have been due to frostbite. Early in Feb., we had 10 below for a few days. I had a 100 watt bulb out there, but it was not enough and I thought he was dead (he will be two in April). He recovered from that (in the house) but this foot.... he has lost 'skin' on the other foot and maybe bits of toes. The tips of his comb were frostbitten and fell off. He is eating, and drinking because I make special trips just to insure he is. He stays under that heat lamp and holds that foot up. Will it heal? I am very concerned. He is my special bird. Oh, and it is awkward wrapping his foot as he has feathers all over his feet and up his leg....
He has had penicillin for three days... he takes the pills very well for me. I thank you for your posts... but it is a gaping wound and I couldn't help but get superglue inside... if I went that route. Thanks so much.

Ok.....................I am going to get a lot of flax for this but I am putting it up here for you. Here is a little redneck cure that some dont want to use but it WILL work. The first thing that I would do is clean out the wound as good as you can with a wash cloth and some antibacterial soap, rinse it off, boil it with peroxide (destroys the tissue but it sounds like it's pretty bad) and then.................................use super glue to close the wound. Yes, I said super glue, try not to get it on the tissue inside of the wound if you dont have to just shut the wound up with a light dabbing motion. I would also give him a half a cc of injectible penicillin in the thigh just to make sure that he isnt infected and then inject him for a few more days to follow up.
It sounds like you have him roosting on a 2 x 4 (narrow end up) sized roost or less. I always make my chickens roost on the 4 inch side when the weather gets nasty to prevent frost bite on the feet but then again my roosts are removable.
By the way, believe it or not I am all organic but with something like this I would rather be safe then sorry.
