Bantam Showed up in LA backyard

Your chicken Pearl looks a bit like a Dutch bantam. She has bleu of slate legs, large wings, can fly rather well. All characteristics of Dutch bantams. But she is not pure with her colouring. How much does she weigh?

I have a Pearl too by the way. The Black Dutch on yhe right.

Yes or.. even better. Let her become broody and search for someone who sell hatchery eggs nearby. Give her 4- 6 eggs and see what happens. Only be prepared you can get s few cockerels too.

Under 600 grams she is probably most Dutch.

I had a prefab coop/run combi of 3m2 and a run of 9 m2 for 6 small bantams. This is okay. But besides that I let them free range an hour or two each day if possible.

Things in the coop to be busy. To jump on crawl under, a sand bath on a dry spot. Sun and also shade if it gets warm.

Spend time with her. Don’t try to catch her, dont use a broom, stay calm and lure her.

If you want her to come back to the coop to sleep inside , I’m sure a week is not enough.
But there is a another way to deal with tree huggers. Lure Pearl inside the run an hour before sunset with some treats. If she is as smart as she looks like. She definitely will learn its snack time when the sun gets low.

Your chickens are elegantly beautiful! What is the name of your Dutch bantam?

You have shared so many pearls of wisdom. Yes, pun intended. Ive been patient with her and slowly she has been spending more time with me. In the morning she sits by my window and cackles to get my attention for her morning feed.

In terms of her weight, I have no idea. It had not even considered weighing her. She is about 8" to 10" tall.

Pearl free ranges all over our yard. She enjoys dust baths underneath the pomegranate tree. Whenever I talk to her I speak with a soft voice and tell her how beautiful she is. Today she enjoyed listening to classical music. My goals has been to have Pearl associate me with relaxation, food, and protection. I hope that once she settles into her coop and run, she will feel more safe. I still plan on letting her forage all over our back yard. I just want her to have a safe place to sleep and lay eggs.

Pearl is such a tree hugger. It drives me crazy that she does not have a safe place to sleep. There are possums in our neighborhood. Scary!

Once time I did confine her in her coop for 30 min and she freaked out but did eat some treats I put inside. I was trying to desensitize her.

I really like your idea of luring her into her run an hour before sunset. Would you recommend that I lure her instead of confining her into her coop for more than one week?

Pearl is a smart survivor. She was left behind and managed to survive for weeks on her own.

Pearl and I greatly appreciate your advice!
