i have 2 bantam hens, and 2 standard hens. and was thinking of getting a silkie rooster. is it as loud as a standard crow? or is it not as loud? my neighbors are also iffy on the side of having a rooster....

Bantam roos' crows are not as loud as standard roos' crows, but they can be penetrating. When it's reaaaal quiet, and suddenly the banty starts crowing, it's like hearing that one whiney mosquito across the silent bedroom at night.

On the other hand, some of my bantam roos have very soft crows, particularly my Chabos (Japanese bantams). You can barely hear them if you're standing outside the coop.

And on the bright side, bantams' crows are usually shorter than the standards'. Most banty roos have a 4-note crow, while standard ones can have a full-throated, 5-note crow. I had a big roo that literally crowed "cock-a-doo-dle-doo!!!" Really! It sound like he was saying it! But all my banty roos say "er-er-ER-er." ;D

Wow. My guys are totally different.

My banty is really loud and he likes to draw his crows waaaaaayyyyyyy on out. It's a wonder the neighbor's haven't whacked him yet. My standard is deeper and shorter usually. Generally he follows the lead of the banty crower.

I love both boys, but the banty is way more obnoxious.

Keep in mind that silkies are their own little world. My silkie hens make very different sounds than my other girls. I'm guessing the roos would too.

LOL

BEST quote EVER!!!!

We have a 1/2 banty rooster and he's like er-er-ER-er? (like, did I forget an er in there?) lol and then he looks around like what the heck?! Actually now that I think about it, he's more like Cock-a-ER-er? or er-Er-Do-----(cut short in the middle, like someone choked him or something).

My little rhode island red bantam has a smaller crow, but it's deeper - I can hear it over the high pitched crows. Thank god we have him though... all other roosters have perished due to their crows and he's still around lol

thank you.

We had a cochin brahma mix. He was gigantic, but he never had a doodle

We have bantam cochin now, who was suppossed to be a girl. I asked here and some people said their banties crow as loudly and some people said that they can hardly hear theirs. I am praying that ours doesn't crow to much. We have a mean neighbor. I will let you know when it happens though

If I were you though, I would not take the risk unless you are sure that you have a good home to take him to if you can't keep him.

My standard roos had a nice deep crow which could get pretty loud. But the bantie roos... well, their sound carried. Every banty roos (including the current one) have this shriller, high pitched crow. They can be very annoying.

But I've never had silkie roos, so they might be different. My silkie hen was much quieter, the roos might be too. Maybe you should PM a Silkie breeder and get their opinions.

I think it's six decibels from one, half a dozen decibels from the other.

I have several roosters, some full-sized, some compact models. They all sound about the same in terms of loudness, but the pitch varies depending on the individual. You also have to figure that what bantam roos lack in size, they more than make up in attitude. So a banty might not crow as deep or as loud, but he might feel the need to crow more often.

The worst-sounding crow I ever heard was from a Sebright we had. He sounded like a screechy wind-up toy, and he made noise all throughout the day. He also was an ankle-jabber, making it perilous to cross the yard in one piece. It was such a relief to finally get rid of him!

The best-sounding crow I ever heard came from a huge White Jersey Giant we used to have. Buck had a deep, rich baritone crow, he should have recorded albums with that voice.

You're just going to have to make peace with that neighbor, resign him to hearing crowing from your yard. Bribe him well with fresh eggs, and buy him some ear plugs.
