I was just wondering what the differences are between bantam and standard size chicks. Do they develop at different rates? Are the standards larger as chicks? I have 6 Welsummer chicks that I got from TSC (3 male, 3 female), however at 4 weeks old, they're flying. One can fly up on top of the baby gate, all of them can fly out of the bath tub, and they can go for a good 2 feet or so before they come back down. My friend who has both says that her banties were doing the same thing at 4 weeks, but that standards don't usually do that. Anyone else have any experience?

Bantam and standard chicks are very different in size. Some of my bantams as chicks would climb inside of the feed trough to scratch through the food. By comparison, standard chicks of the same age could only fit their heads through. Flight at 4 weeks is normal for bantams and standards--only the heaviest breeds will stay grounded.
